History of the game. Deaf sports celebrated its centenary.

We show a video about the history of deaf sports since 1924.

The first World Deaf Games were held in 1924 in Paris, and since then they are currently held every four years, with the exception of the period of World War II. The participants of the first games in Paris were representatives of Belgium, Czechoslovakia, France, Great Britain, the Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Italy, Latvia and Romania.

The athletes were the first to take part in competitions in athletics, cycling, football, shooting and swimming. The games were a success.

On August 16, 1924, the leadership of the independent delegations of the participating countries at the meeting established the International Committee of Sports for the Deaf (ICSD) (French: Comite International des Sport des Sport des Sourds – CISS, English: International Committee of Sports for the Deutch – ICSD), the main goal of which was the complex unification of all international federations of the deaf and the development of their charter for the creation and management of the newly emerged competition. In the same year, it was decided that the games should be held by the heads for four years.

Only 25 years later, in January 1949, the 1st World Winter Games for the Deaf were held in Austria, in which 33 athletes from five countries took part. In 1955, the International Olympic Committee recognized the ICSD as an international federation with Olympic principles, and two years later the committee began to change the charter, bringing it into line with the Olympic principles. Today, the ICSD includes more than 90 national federations. The IOC Executive Board decided in May 2001 that the World Games of the Deaf were renamed the Deaflympics (“Deaflympics”). That same year, the XIX Deaflympics were held in Rome. More than 3,000 athletes from 80 countries were hoping to win medals.

The integration of Deaflympics and Paralympic sports failed, and the International Sports Committee was officially released from the International Paralympic Committee in 1995.

To participate in the Deaflympics, an athlete must have a hearing ability of at least 55 dB in the better ear. The use of hearing aids and cochlear implants during competitions is not permitted.

The Deaflympics are held in the year following the Olympic Games. The last Summer Games (with the participation of 2,400 athletes) were held in 2022 in Brazil, and the Winter Games were held in 2024 in Turkey (530 athletes).

The next Summer Deaflympics will be held in Tokyo in 2025.
