Football holds a special place in the hearts of the deaf community, as it is the oldest sport for the deaf, having been included in the Summer Deaflympics program since 1924. This landmark inclusion was made possible through the support of the International Sports Committee of the Deaf (ICSD), which introduced football at the World Summer Games for the Deaf in Paris, France. From this historic moment, the journey of deaf football began, laying the foundation for decades of growth and success.
Steady Growth and Global Participation
Since its inception, deaf football has experienced remarkable development. The most recent Deaflympics in 2022, held in Caxias do Sul, Brazil, showcased this growth, with 16 teams competing in the football tournament. The qualifying rounds for the event saw participation from over fifty teams, a testament to the sport’s widespread appeal and expansion.
Women’s football also holds a significant place in this story. It made its debut in the Summer Deaflympics in 2005 in Melbourne, Australia. Since then, women’s football has grown rapidly, standing firmly on its own and continuing to develop at an impressive pace.
Similarly, women’s futsal found its place on the global stage at the 2nd World Deaf Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, in 2007. In 2008, for the first time in history, the World Championships for both deaf men’s and women’s football were held in Patras, Greece.
Football in the Deaflympics Today
Today, football is one of the most prestigious and widely participated sports in the Deaflympic Games. Beyond the Deaflympic tournaments, deaf football thrives globally through various continental and world championships held across regions like Europe, Asia, and Pan-America. These events bring together teams from over 70 countries, celebrating the talent and unity of the deaf sports community.
Men’s and women’s futsal have also flourished, hosting numerous championships and continuing to grow in popularity.
The Foundation of DIFA
In response to the rapid expansion of deaf football, the Deaf International Football Association (DIFA) was established. Officially registered on June 14, 2010, in Geneva, Switzerland, DIFA became a full member of the ICSD in 2015 and developed working relations with FIFA. By September 2018, DIFA was also registered in Moscow, Russia.
DIFA is an internationally recognized organization dedicated to the development and promotion of football and futsal for the deaf worldwide. Its primary objectives include advancing football for the deaf across the globe, organizing men’s and women’s world championships for all ages in collaboration with the ICSD, hosting international competitions in partnership with other associations, managing international sports relations within the frameworks of DIFA and FIFA.
Key areas of focus for DIFA include the development of children’s football, especially in the African region, and the creation of specialized educational materials in international sign language. DIFA also conducts seminars and conferences for referees, coaches, and managers in deaf football.
